In 2015, Designmuseum Danmark celebrated its 125th anniversary. From the beginning, the museum has had a strong focus on Japanese art as inspiration for Danish art and industrial design. Exquisite Japanese applied art added an extraordinary boost to Danish arts and crafts around the turn of the century. The fascination stayed through the 20th century and today the connection between Japanese and Danish design is still vigorous. The exhibition presents the museum s world-class Japanese collection as well as Danish handicrafts, design, posters and graphic art with inspiration from Japan. All the museum s different groups of materials will be exhibited, including objects that have rarely been on display. Learning from Japan. Danish Design Now represents a selection of contemporary Danish design covering the entire spectrum: furniture, product design, graphic design, fashion, and design in the public space. All objects are designed in the 21st century by leading and talented Danish designers. Danish Design Now reflects present times multiplicity of new designers and craftsmen as well as tendencies, life style choices, and technological innovations. The exhibition includes Danish crafts, represented by super objects within the fields of ceramics, glass and jewellery made by the most talented and artistically innovative designers. It also gives the first overview of the trends that shaped Danish design in close dialogue with international design movements since the pre-2000 design boom. Fashion & Fabric. In December 2014, Designmuseum Danmark for the first time in the museum s history opened a permanent exhibition of fashion and textiles showing a wealth of designs, patterns, motifs and colours represented in textiles, outfits and accessories. With around 400 exhibits from the museum s sizeable collections, the exhibition provides visitors with a unique perspective into fashion and textile design history with a particular focus on Danish developments in the field over the past 300 to 400 years. Following three thematic lines Design and Decoration, Handicrafts and Industry, Body and Identity the exhibition relates design history with textile technology, production forms, tastes, fashions, and home furnishings through the ages. Mode & Tekstil.
Design and Crafts of the 20th Century. The exhibition on the industrial design and crafts of the 20th century presents Danish design history in light of the aesthetic discussions and social, technical, and economic conditions of the time. With key figures such as Poul Henningsen, Kaare Klint, Verner Panton and Arne Jacobsen, design and architecture are linked together in the museum s interpretation of dreams and reality in the 20th century. The exhibition also draws on an international design perspective. Mange hovedstykker indgår i museets permanente udstillinger. The Porcelain Collection. From its foundation in 1890 up to the present day, Designmuseum Danmark has acquired around 3000 ceramic works from the period 1700-1880. More than 120 factories are represented in the rich collections which illustrate the development of the European ceramic culture, from the earliest endeavours to true industrial production. Many important works are included in the museum s permanent exhibitions. In the Porcelain Collection, all the other holdings have been made accessible to the public as an open storage and study area. SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS SÆRUDSTILLINGER 13. 5. 21. 8. 2016 Spheres Perspectives in Precision & Poetry for BMW designed by Alfredo Häberli. The renowned designer Alfredo Häberli has joined forces with BMW to create a compelling installation that tackles the values of future mobility at a conceptual level. With a lead in the BMW Design leitmotif Precision & Poetry, the Zurich-based designer has embarked on a thought journey that begins with childhood memories, sketches and formal studies. It ends with a large scale model and leads to a spatial installation that allows personal thoughts on future mobility to be experienced in the present. The focus of the exhibition is a model that translates the theme of future mobility and invites the observer on an individual journey into the mobile future. The installation was showcased for the first time in Milan for the Salone del Mobile in 2015. Installationen blev vist første gang under Milanos store design event, Salone del Mobile, i 2015. 17. 6. 2016 25. 9. 2016 Marie Gudme Leth Pioneer of print. Designmuseum Danmark is displaying a number of Marie Gudme Leth s textile prints and invites all visitors into a colourful universe with a selection of the beautiful patterns. Marie Gudme Leth (1895-1997) was a pioneer in her field. She revived textile printing as an artisanal craft in Denmark around 1930 and created a number of classic textile designs that became immensely popular in their day and still continue to delight a modern audience. With the ability to renew her artistic language, and to develop her style and adapt to changing tastes and technological innovations, Marie Gudme Leth has become an icon for many textile designers and she has played an important role in building a professional foundation for the generations that followed. Marie Gudme Leth Pioneer of print. 5. 5. 2016-21. 8. 2016 FDB Graphic design. FDB is not only well-know for their furniture design, but also for their posters, labels and packaging. As the furniture became commonplace, FDB also focused on the graphic design. With FDB s 150th anniversary, Designmuseum Danmark will showcase a selection of posters and other graphic design elements in a small exhibition. All Danes know of the Black Circle Coffee-woman and The Davregirls. The exhibition displays these two along with a number of other landmark FDB posters, designed by Aage Sikker Hansen, Maggie Baaring, and Arne Ungermann among others. With their simple, functional and colourful design, FDB labels and packaging were innovative Danish commercial art in the first decades after World War 2. FDB Grafisk design.
