Just back from Denmark, I was inspired to start a new series about Danish cities and Aalborg became the first city to be in the limelight. Front page photos are all images from Aalborg. Isn t it great that we just hit the 200 member mark? The club is going good, although there always seems to be another urgent maintenance task pressing on. Our Scandinavian Festival on 23 September 2012 is shaping up to become bigger and better than expected as ideas keep flowing in. It will take a fair bit of money and we re planning a huge raffle and we need your help to sell tickets. With fresh funding from the Lord Mayor s Fund, which is mainly to be used for hiring equipment, we have the opportunity to close Austin Street and have a street party. It s going to be great make sure you book the date. As far as I understand, the QLD Multicultural Festival at Roma Street has been cancelled so we need to generate our festival funds in our own backyard. GETTING CLOSE TO AALBORG Aalborg (or Ålborg) is a Danish industrial and university city in North Jutland. The city of Aalborg has a population of 104,885 (126,556 including Nørresundby), making it the fourth largest city in Denmark in terms of population. The municipality of Aalborg has a population of 201,142 (2012) making it the third most populous municipality in the country after Copenhagen and Århus. The earliest settlements date back to around AD 700. Aalborg's location by the Limfjord made it an important harbour during the Middle Ages, and an industrial centre later. Today, the city is in transition from a working-class industrial city to a knowledge-based one The city remains an industrial and commercial centre in North Jutland, exporting grain, cement and fish. Many of the traditional industries in the city have been closed in recent years and new knowledge based industries have arisen. Especially mobile and wireless communications industries have been dominant in Aalborg since the 1990s. One of the traditional industries include De Danske Spritfabrikker's production facility for the distillation of the Aalborg family of akvavits consisting of 17 different brands. The company became part of the Pernod-Ricard group some years ago. Aalborg Industries, the world's largest manufacturer of marine boilers, is headquartered here. Sights The old Aalborghus Castle (Aalborghus Slot) and some picturesque houses of the 17th century remain in the center of the town. The half-timbered (bindingsværk) castle was built in 1550 by King Christian III and was converted to government administration offices in the 1950s. Jens Bang s House, a five story building built in 1624 by the merchant Jens Bang is an example of Renaissance architecture. It is located on Nytorv next to the old Town Hall.

The present Budolfi Church dates from the end of the 14th century, although at least two earlier churches stood on the same spot. Budolfi Church was just a parish church until it became the seat of the Lutheran bishop of Aalborg in 1554. Vor Frue Kirke ("Church of Our Lady") is a relatively modern church. The original Church of Our Lady from the early 12th century was pulled down after the Reformation because it was so old and unstable. The newer building in a different location was partially burned in 1894. Underneath the main pedestrian shopping street is a newly opened museum of the excavation of a monastery from the 11th century. Nørresundby is the site of the Lindholm Høje settlement and burial ground from the Germanic Iron Age and Viking times. There is also a museum on the site. Near the Aalborg Tower is KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art Aalborg. The art museum was designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and built in 1972. In 2008, the Utzon Center, dedicated to the work of the noted architect Jørn Utzon, was built next to the Limfjord at the central harbour front in Aalborg. Born in Copenhagen, Utzon grew up in Aalborg. The center contains an exhibition on Utzon's work as well as educational displays on architecture and design. It also holds a sailing boat ( spidsgatter ) designed by Utzon s shipbuilder father. One of the most popular and famous streets in Aalborg, possibly even in Denmark, is Jomfru Ane Gade, or simply just Gaden ("The Street"). Jomfru Ane Gade is a café and restaurant street during the day which, at night, turns into clubs, discos and bars. During the 1990s, the street was infamous for being a 'hang out' of two biker gangs who were at war for some years all over Scandinavia, but as the bikers disappeared from the street, it became even more popular among people of all ages. During the day, tourists and city workers alike come to Jomfru Ane Gade, especially for its restaurants. In the afternoon, some of the cafés open. Around 11 pm, the mood of the street changes into more of a party street when younger people arrive. On 28 March 2012, the rail bridge across the Limfjord was hit by the Finnish container ship Ramona. Initially it was estimated that the damage to the opening bridge deck and rails would take six months to repair. In the collision, the 300 tons opening deck was moved up to one meter and can no longer operate. All passenger rail traffic across the Limfjord is now by bus, adding considerable pressure to the road bridge. Aalborg Kloster (sources: www.wikipedia.org and www.visitdenmark.dk)

We need volunteers to help out at the Scandinavian Festival 2012. If you can spare a couple of hours to help in the Stalls or stallholders for the Scandinavian Festival. If you have any ideas, talk to a committee member. It s fairly urgent. Kafe Svea is skipping the August event, but will return in September. Don t forget to pay your membership fees by 24 July 2012 to participate in the prize draw on 27 July 2012. Ambassador Susanne Shine has left Canberra to prepare for her new posting in Washington DC. Events May & June were busy months with the Eurovision Song Contest event by the Swedes (and they won too), the May Folkies Old & New Concert, Café Denmark and Teddy Bear s Birthday Party. In June we had a special evening out at the Saga Vikings village in Petrie with a big St Hans bonfire and the committee members present were happy to present Saga Vikings with a donation to support their efforts. The Christmas in July event scheduled for July was subsequently cancelled with the roof project expected to go ahead. New equipment and maintenance Towards the end of the financial year, the big decision was taken to proceed with the removal and replacement of the asbestos roof. The project quote is for approx. $65,000 plus GST and the committee expects additional costs to replace fascia boards and other timbers which may be damaged. The project will drain the coffers, but the committee has not succeeded in obtaining grant funding for it. The work will be carried out in the middle of August, the original dates in July didn t suit the asbestos removal firm. The committee intends to apply for funding to install solar panels and made sure to apply for the $0.44 buy-back before the deadline. Power is one of our largest overall costs at approx. $5,000+ annually and the investment in solar energy makes sense. Installation was not possible with the old roof. Toilet seats have not yet been replaced and we now have some water damage to the ceiling in the men s toilet. A new freezer has replaced the old freezer and we have splurged on a trolley and step ladder. Have just noted a problem with the air conditioning which will require an electrician, so fingers crossed. Money The club accounts have been safely restored after the treasurer s computer crash and the annual accounts for the financial year 2011/12 have been sent to Wilson Ross, our auditors. Membership 7 new members joined since April and the club actually reached the 200 member mark just as it was time for renewals. Remember to pay your membership fees and help us keep up the record membership levels. The committee is proud that we have been able to maintain our fees and prices unchanged for the past many years. Scandinavian Festival 23 September 2012 The huge work behind the scenes has started. Raffle, sponsors, entertainment, stalls, website, logo, volunteers and advertising must all come together for the big event. Which will now become bigger than expected with a $10,000 grant from the Lord Mayor s Fund. Committee members Viv Lindup will be taking a break from her committee work. Merete Gorry, who has recently come to Brisbane from Perth with her family, is joining the committee. Food Supervisor Course The club has two new food supervisors: Michael Schmidt and Iben Giessing Lund have passed the food supervisor course. Also the club retained its three-star rating following inspection by Brisbane City Council. AGM The committee is aiming for 9 September 2012.

3 Danish craftsmen seeking jobs! We are 3 students from Denmark, with training as bricklayers and carpenters. We are very skilled and with 5 years of experience. The reason why we are here, "Down Under" for six months, is to study Bachelor of Architectural Technology and Construction Management at Southbank Institute of Technology in Brisbane. We are therefore only available for jobs on weekends and holidays. We are willing to do all kinds of work. Unfortunately we didn t bring our tools, because our main purpose is to study. We speak good English - and work hard! Write a mail or call us - we would like to meet up for a job interview.
