From the Editor Dear Members, The Annual General Meeting was held at Heimdal s clubhouse on Sunday 18 th of August. A continued AGM is to be held on September 13 th, see page 3 The big event, of the month if not the year, is of course The Grand 130 th Birthday Ball at the Sheraton. See pages 16 and 17 for further information. You may find this issue, our first attempt to produce Heimdal s Newsletter, a bit thin. Feel free to send me material in an email, fax or send me a traditional letter, typed or handwritten in English or Danish. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Notice of Continued Annual General Meeting On September 13, 2002 At 7 pm Due to difficulties in obtaining audited accounts, for the AGM on August 18, a new meeting is needed. Financial members of Heimdal are invited to attend a Continued Annual General Meeting at the club premises followed by the rehearsal of protocol etc. for The Grand 130 th Birthday Ball. Agenda: 1. Financial Report 2. Election of Auditor Draft of Minutes for AGM THE DANISH ASSOCIATION "HEIMDAL" INC. MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Held at 36 Austin Street, Newstead, on Sunday, 18 August, 2002. PRESENT: 7 Committee members (Ole Andersen, Joan Christensen, Ann & Jorgen de Voss, Mivi Ottesen, Harly Pedersen, Ulla Turner) and 17other financial members. APOLOGIES: Merete Kern, Merete Lublin, Alan Przybylak MEETING OPENED: The President, Ulla Turner, opened the meeting at 5.12pm, and welcomed members to the meeting. MINUTES OF LAST MEETING: Minutes of last year's Annual General Meeting held on Sunday 5 August 2001 were read by the Minutes Secretary, Joan Christensen. Ole Andersen pointed out that his position as a Committee Member had not been noted in the minutes. Acceptance, as amended, moved by Joan Christensen, seconded by Ulla Turner. Approved by the meeting. PAGE 3

TREASURER'S REPORT: Ole Andersen, in the absence of the retiring Treasurer, Merete Kern, explained that the audited accounts were not yet available. There had been difficulties in obtaining correct accounts from Robert White to whom Cor Frederiks had passed the accounts for audit. Ole Andersen moved, and Ulla Turner seconded, that the acceptance of audited accounts and the appointment of the Auditor for 2002-2003 be handled by a "continued" Annual General Meeting, to be held on Friday 13 September at the Club premises (preceding the rehearsal for the Ball.) This was agreed by the meeting. In the meantime, Ole had prepared some interim figures showing results of the Kitchen and the Bar profits, and an Income and Expenditure Account - but all the figures were subject to finalisation when the accounts and audit were complete. Overall, the takings from the Kitchen and Bar had both improved. The African Club would be terminating their association with us due to falling membership. The Swiss Club had negotiated their option and would continue for another three years, paying $2,850 p.a. (subject to CPI increases), handling their own bar, and reducing the number of times they used the club premises. While these rough estimates showed a profit of over $11,000, that figure would be reduced by Depreciation, and if Donations and the takings from the shop were deducted, the Club was in fact barely breaking even. PRESIDENT'S REPORT: Ulla Turner, the President thanked the Committee for its hard work during the year. She emphasized the need for more members for the Club, and for more members to help with the work of the Club. Ulla also spoke of the need to plan for the longterm future of the Club. She acknowledged the contributions made by many members, including William Spencer's Santa Claus, and Ann and Arild Nielsen with their delicious pork for Christmas and Christmas-in-July. She then presented commemorative wine goblets to the Committee members in recognition of their commitment. ELECTION OF OFFICE BEARERS: The Committee retired. Ulla Turner moved, and Ole Andersen seconded, that Prebin Mellin take the Chair for the election of the new committee. The nominations for office bearers were read out by Prebin Mellin, and the election proceeded as follows: President: Ulla Turner nominated by Ole Andersen, seconded by Jorgen de Voss (As there were no other nominations, Ulla Turner was elected President) Minutes Secretary: Joan Christensen nominated by Ulla Turner, seconded Jorgen de Voss. Membership Officer: Ann De Voss nominated by Ole Andersen, seconded by Aage Christoffersen Committee members: Erik Andersen nominated by Mivi Ottesen, seconded by Harly Pedersen PAGE 4

Ole Andersen nominated by Ulla Turner, seconded by Ann de Voss Jorgen De Voss nominated by Ulla Turner, seconded by Arild Nielsen Alan Przybylak nominated by Ulla Turner, seconded by Molly Johnsson Harly Pedersen nominated by Jorgen de Voss, seconded by Ann Nielsen Ann Nielsen nominated from the floor by Jorgen de Voss, seconded by Ulla Turner Preben Mellin pointed out that no nominations had been received for the positions of Vice- President, Secretary or Treasurer, and that the position of Editor of the Newsletter was vacant and urgently needed filling. After further discussion among the members the following nominations were finally made: Vice-President: Arild Nielsen nominated by Anny Pedersen, seconded by Harly Pedersen (Arild had originally been elected as a committee member but this was superseded by this nomination. As there were no other nominations, Arild Nielsen was elected Vice- President) There were still no nominations for Secretary or Treasurer, and it was left to the elected Committee to determine who should undertake those roles. The position of Editor of the Newsletter may be undertaken by Yrsa and Aage Christoffersen who have agreed to look at the production of a simpler format. There was considerable discussion about the Newsletter - about the possibility of emailing it to many members, reducing the number of hard copies needed, reducing the number of pages, etc. It was suggested that members be surveyed - to ascertain their email addresses, and to elicit opinions about the Newsletter, its format, content, etc. The content and format of the Newsletter will be the responsibility of the new joint Editors. The President, Ulla Turner thanked the members for their confidence and spoke of the need both to increase our income, and to plan for the future of the Club. A lively discussion followed with several suggestions, including hire of big screen TV for special events and to attract younger people. General Business: The President was asked about the progress of plans for the 130 th Birthday Ball. Ulla outlined the programme for the evening, with Stig Hokansen as MC, a performance by the Danish Folk Dancers, a minimum of formal speeches, a Birthday Cake featuring the three Scandinavian flags, and entertainment by the visiting Danish entertainer Bent Fabricius- Bjerre. A dance band would provide music for the remainder of the evening. MEETING CONCLUDED: 7.05pm If you want to add or have anything changed in the minutes contact Joan Christensen by email at chrisglenva@bigpond.com or phone 07 3356 3512 PAGE 5

Letter from Editor It is with mixed feelings I am taking on this huge task of being Editor of Heimdal s Newsletter. Firstly because Merete Lublin s excellent work is hard to follow up on and I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for the countless hours spent on producing the Newsletter. Thank you Merete for a job very well done. Secondly I am not familiar with the setup of this type of computerwork but my husband, Aage, has promised to look after the technical side of the production and I will look after selecting and presenting the news and do the typing. All up this is going to be a joint venture for us and we are looking forward to the challenge. As you know Aage also looks after Heimdal s Website. If you have specific wishes, as to where, in Heimdal s Newsletter and/or Heimdal s Website, your letter/information, sent to us, may be published, please state it clearly. Otherwise you can expect the information to show up in the Newsletter and/or on the Website as we find appropriate. You will find this, our first attempt, a bit different to previous newsletters but time constraints and inexperience mean that we have limited changes to get the Newsletter out to you as early as possible. Trust me it, it has been hard (computer)work for Aage. Having it set up and working well it will be easier in the future. Some pages will disappear and new columns will turn up. This month you will find a bit for your tummy in Onkel Peter s Livret, a bit for your laughing muscle in Lune Jyder and a Danish Australian connection in Nyt fra Kongehuset. Please send us letters and other useful information which you think is of interest for other Members and Friends of the Danish Association, Heimdal. Kind Regards Yrsa and Aage Christoffersen PAGE 9

PAGE 12 H e i m d a l JULY GOLF "Play the shot you can play best, not the shot that would look the best if you could pull it off." -- Harvey Penick Onchocerciasis affects about 20 million people. Also known as River Blindness it is transmitted by a (female) black fly. The parasitic worms that are responsible for such have sex within ones body, yuck they wrap together in a nodule like a ball of string and the dead or dying cause the blindness. I don t believe any of our members allows sex like that in their bodies, at least not the nice ones. The weather report at this month s golf caper was as the May golf article changeable weather made one day seem like two with us finishing in bright sunshine. The Gold Coast Country Club meet was our first outing there and being on the South side some of our North Coast players took the opportunity to have a Southern sojourn staying overnight and indulging in after sunset things, which made a weekend of it for them. We ought to do the same for Horton Park on the 25th., remember Hannah and Jens offered their hospitality for the occasion. The heavy down pour on very dry ground left a surprising amount of pooled water that led one to believe that the soil profile might be out of balance. Unless soil is attended to, possibly after primary treated effluent, a crust will form below the surface so not allowing water to be absorbed properly. You might have noticed that there were exposed drainage outlets in the bunkers that are normally buried. Not a criticism for we all seemed to enjoy the course especially that corner with all of the interesting water bits. Jens Antonsen did well in the A grade G o l f J u l y putting with 29 and Jens Andersen in B grade finishing with 34. Herr Antonsen also excelled in the A grade comp with 66 with Kai Skindbjerg (I always have to check that name) on 72 with Paul Spencer on 82. In the B grade Jens Andersen led the field with 70, Thomas Engstrup following on with 75 and William Spencer with 77. For Nearest The Pin William did well on the 4th., Herr Antonsen on the 8th., Paul Spencer on the 12th. and finally Hanne Jonsson showing her expertise on the 17th. (she was later cautioned for doing so). As you are aware the Gold Coast Club had to postpone our original golf day and for doing so donated two free games as well as a discount on fees, the free games were raffled and the lucky winners were Preben Mellin and Richard McCouaig (I always have to check that name). The fifth fairway although interesting could not be as interesting as the one in Japan where in 1978 an interesting fungi was found by a Japanese scientist (perhaps he sliced a shot and grubbing around in the undergrowth stumbled upon it. Many antibiotics come from fungus, like penicillin for example, and it was from this golf course fungus that a compound was produced that had wonderful results in curing River Blindness. The Cure is all around us. The above comes from Dr. Hugh Taylor, Professor of Ophthalmology although all of the mistakes are mine. Finally one of our members, Thomas Enstrup on the Thursday following our game joined the Army. We wish him well in his new career and hope to see him again in the future, if the military allows. Happy golfing, William.

PAGE 13

Fodbold Schmeichel holdt nullet i debut.
