Global warming, the C02 debate and increasing energy prices are setting the agenda within the construction sector. The focus is on environmental, social and financial sustainability, and on how architects can help to explore and revise how the construction sector can reduce resource and energy consumption and thus contribute to a better environment. Aarhus Arkitekterne has decided to take up the challenge. The task involves creating beautiful and functional design which is also based on sustainable and long-term solutions. It involves creating inspiring and architecturally meaningful settings taking the right decisions that will benefit the environment. More specifically, the firm has specialised in that which is termed passive house construction. Here, the buildings combine very low heating consumption with a high level of comfort and house all the usual possibilities for innovation and spatial design. And the passiv house building standard can be applied to all types of buildings. The folder shows some of the passive building projects with which Aarhus Arkitekterne is involved. And more visionary projects are in the pipeline. Aarhus Arkitekterne s ambition is still to be a market leader within passive building construction in Denmark, and in this way contribute to focusing on an important area of activity within the environment and sustainability.
Aarhus Arkitekterne is one of ten drawing offices which have been selected to design tomorrow s singlefamily houses as low-energy buildings. The so-called Comfort Houses, which are being built according to the passive house standard, are situated in Vejle Ådal, a beautiful river valley near Vejle, Jutland. Architecturally, Aarhus Arkitekterne s house falls under the modernistic architectural tradition with its minimalist design, white plaster walls and slim, black window frames. At the centre of the space is a core containing a wet room and the compact unit that produces hot water and the warm air used to heat the house.

Aarhus Arkitekterne has been charged with a thorough modernisation of residential units from the 1940, which will be brought up to date. Out of respect for the building s great architectural value for the city, the original facades facing the street are being preserved. Towards the courtyard, an addition will be build in a modern design. All the flats will have large, open balconies to provide considerable visual and physical connection between the outdoor and indoor spaces. Together with the large, common roof garten, the buildings transparency will increase the social community. While the renovation meets energy class 2 specifications of Danish law, the plan is to build the extension according to the passive house standard. Thus the building will be an outstanding example on adapting new dimensions of sustainability to old buildings in a central, urban context.

The project consists of 66 passive residential units for young people and a brand new students building, and will be the first passive residential building project on this scale in Denmark. The assignment consisted of taking a fresh approach to designing housing for young people, built as a passive house of a high architectural quality and within the agreed financial framework. The concept evolved into a well-conceived residential unit, which can be prefabricated and assembled like blocks. The flats consist of one continuous, flexible space. A superfurniture or a core located in the centre of the flat contains toilet and kitchen facilities. Moreover, the building distinguishes itself as a pilot project in that heating and power are produced from

Hand in hand with increasing energy prices and focus on reducing CO2, there is considerable interest being shown in passive buildings. In Austria, Switzerland and Germany, numerous passive houses have already been constructed, while there has been a slightly more reticent approach in Scandinavia. H 2 college - 66 residential units for young people in Herning designed by Aarhus Arkitekterne - is so far the biggest certified passive project to have been built in Denmark. Several of the firm s other passive house projects are now also being built, and even more are on the drawing board. > There are strict requirements for a passive house. A passive house is distinguished by having: > a heating requirement of only 15 kwh/m² of net living area, which is approx. 80% less than the heating consumption in a normal residential building. > the total primary energy consumption for hot water, heating and cooling, ventilation, power for appliances, lighting etc. is less than 120 kwh/m² of living area. the homes are extremely well sealed, with an air change rate of 0.6 h-1, which means they are four times more sealed than what is required by the Danish building code.
Passive houses offer many clear advantages: Because of the ventilation system, the indoor climate is always good and healthy, which makes the house very allergy-friendly. Walls and windows are so well insulated that there are no cold bridges and therefore no drafts. It is far less expensive to run a passive house compared to conventional buildings which meet the current building code, and you are protected from rising energy prices. Finally, you protect the environment due to the fact that CO 2 emissions are minimal in relation to other newly constructed buildings. A lot of interest has been shown for H 2 college in Herning. It has received extensive media coverage, and it has been presented at several conferences as well as in some of the research areas in which the firm participates. It has all helped to draw people s attention to the measures that can be taken to improve the environment through low-energy solutions.
