100 years we are celebrating one of the most colourful and exciting furniture designers of the 20th century at this autumn s international auction. it has been one hundred years since Finn juhl was born on january 30, 1912, and all over the world from Denmark to japan and from the usa to South Korea - the occasion is being celebrated with special exhibitions. recently, Finn juhl designs have regained the same level of popularity and global interest that he enjoyed during the 1950 s. An international breakthrough Finn juhl was the first Danish furniture designer to gain widespread international recognition. his work was vital to spreading the Danish Modern concept around the world. in 1951, Baker Furniture launched a Finn juhl-designed line of furniture. The launch was to coincide with the completion of his most prestigious project the design of the Trusteeship Council Chamber in the united nations headquarters in new york City. at this time, Finn juhl was well into his most productive decade as a designer. Between 1944 and 1955, he created nearly all of the pieces of furniture which would later become synonymous with his name the Fj-44 chair, the Fj-45 chair, the Fj-48 chair, the Fj-49/ Chieftain s chair, and the Fj-53 reading chair. it was also during this decade that he, along with cabinetmaker niels vodder, developed the sensuous and sculptural shapes in wood, which gave his modernist furniture its special character. Craftsmanship merged with a modern and artistic expression - without compromising function. s early years as a furniture designer although the decade marks the height of Finn juhl s work, one should not underestimate the importance of his early pieces of furniture. in 1937, Finn juhl had already started his cooperation with niels vodder. Together, they provided interior design and furniture for private customers. Similar to other architects at that time - Flemming lassen and viggo Boesen, for example Finn juhl also explored and challenged the sculptural form of heavy, plush armchairs and sofas during these early years. one of his most distinctive pieces from this period is the pelican from 1940. Many of Finn juhl s original, early pieces are, today, only known from literature. Those which still exist are seen only on rare occasions, and generally carry a high price. in 2004, for example, Bruun rasmussen sold a pelican for DKK 240,000! a common feature of the overstuffed furniture is its sculptural quality. in the decade following the pelican, Finn juhl developed this sculptural quality further, and then transferred it to his new favourite material wood. The last phase of a life s work after his international breakthrough and success in the 1950 s, Finn juhl s cooperation with niels vodder ended in 1959. They apparently stretched their forms to the limit, and their patience had worn thin. Finn juhl continued arranging exhibitions and designed furniture for several producers, such as the cabinetmaker ludvig pontoppidan. although he remained a central figure in

the world of design, jobs became fewer. just before his death in 1989, he experienced the emerging rediscovery of his furniture, as a retrospective exhibition was being planned, in japan. The exhibition opened in 1990. Entry into the auction market here at Bruun rasmussen, we have had the pleasure of selling Finn juhl s furniture since the 1980 s. at a time when the rococo, louis Xvi, and empire styles were capturing high prices at auction, Finn juhl s furniture found its way into the auction houses as good, used furniture - at reasonable prices. one of our most experienced specialists, with us for 40 years, visited Finn juhl s home in the early 1980 s to evaluate a painting. when he returned to the office, he agreed with the founder, arne Bruun rasmussen, that it was incredible that anybody could live in such a dull home! This scepticism towards Finn juhl designs was common in the auction business at the time. it was later replaced, however, by a growing interest in, understanding of, and delight with these same pieces. Since the late 1990 s, Finn juhl s furniture has been a regular part of Bruun rasmussen s auctions. A tribute to The preparations for this Finn juhl tribute gained momentum during a visit to japan earlier this year, where i, Frederik Bruun rasmussen, was met by an enormous interest in the Danish furniture designer. This was exemplified by the construction of an exact copy of Finn juhl s house in Takayama, the opening of which i had the pleasure of participating in on Finn juhl s 100th birthday. Furthermore, i had the opportunity to meet the japanese design collector, and connoisseur, professor noritsugu oda, author of several books about Finn juhl and Danish design. we are honoured that Mr. noritsugu oda will attend the opening of our preview on Thursday, September 13th, where he will speak about his passion for Finn juhl at 4 pm. an interpreter will translate the lecture from japanese into Danish. The goal of this tribute has been to gather a comprehensive collection of Finn juhl s furniture, one showing the breadth of his designs. we hope that the rare and lesser known pieces will only add to the growing knowledge about Finn juhl. additionally, with such variety in the collection, many people will have the opportunity to acquire a piece of Finn juhl furniture, and perhaps start their own small collection. all the furniture in this special catalogue was produced during Finn juhl s lifetime, and can, therefore, be considered vintage. our autumn auction also includes an exciting selection of his furniture produced in later years. you will find these pieces in the Modern art & Design catalogue. we welcome you to a rewarding glimpse into Finn juhl s life s work. Frederik Bruun rasmussen & peter Kjelgaard, head of the Design Department

King Frederik ix at the 1949 Exhibition 1051 "Chieftain Chair". fj 49a. a teak easy chair. seat, armrests and back, fitted with buttons, upholstered with patinated natural leather. Designed 1949. Made and stamped by cabinetmaker niels Vodder, Copenhagen. For the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition in 1949 designed the chair that became known as the Chieftain Chair. It is probably the most characteristic of all his pieces of furniture. It did however then not receive undivided recoqnition among the critics, but today most agreee that it is among his masterpieces. At the 1949 exhibtion showed, that in shaping the wooden frame of the chair, he had been inspired by the shapes of weapons and everyday utensils of indigenous people. If that was, why the chair got its name is unknown. has himself told, that a journalist at the opening of the 1949 Exhibtion, had asked him, since the Danish King Frederik IX had sat in the chair, if the chair now should be called The Kings Chair. had found that too pretentious, and replied You should rather call it a Chieftain Chair, which the Jounalist then did. living with today, finn Juhl s furniture can be found in many museums around the world. But the furniture of finn Juhl was never intended to be put on display only to be admired from a distance. finn Juhl regarded his furniture as sculptural objects that retained a clear functional value. He wanted the shapes and colours of his furniture to interplay with the art, objects and light of the space within which they were set. He wanted spaces that were modern and functional, yet filled with warmth and humanity. the danish company Onecollection has now taken on the mammoth task of passing on the legacy of finn Juhl to future generations. triggered by their own personal interest in the designer, the people behind Onecollection have developed their involvement with finn Juhl into a global presence. they have undertaken the most comprehensive and serious research into the archives of finn Juhl and managed to bring many of the most iconic and classic models by finn Juhl back to life. the following 25 lots offer a great opportunity to enjoy the universe of finn Juhl in one of his timeless classics. 1078 1078 * an oregonpine sideboard mounted on anodized metal legs, "shoes" and handles of teak. front with six trays lacquered in resp. white, yellow, orange, red and black, and two yellow and white lacquered sliding doors. interior with shelves and storage space. designed 1955.
