Årsager The cause of a disease event is an event, condition or characteristic that preceeded the disease event and without which the disease would not have occurred at all or would not have occurred until some later time (Rothman and Greenland, 1998)
Årsager Eksempler Rygning giver lungekræft Ioniserende stråling giver leukæmi Men Ikke alle rygere får lungekræft Ikke alle de japanere, som var tæt på amerikanske atombomber, udviklede leukæmi
The concept of causation the cause of any effect must consist of a constellation of components that act in concert (Mill, 1862)
The concept of causation
The concept of causation A sufficient cause, which means a complete causal mechanism, can be defined as a set of minimal conditions and events that inevitably produce disease; minimal implies that all of the conditions and events are necessary (Rothman and Greenland, 1998) Causes Sufficient cause Component cause Necessary cause
Spatiotemporal specificity (Miettinen, 1986) Forklare forskelle i associationers styrke
Ætiologisk fraktion I II III A B A D B E C F 70% 20 % 10% Ætiologiske fraktioner A = 70 % + 20 % = 90 % B = 70 % + 10 % = 80 % C = 70 % etc.
Ætiologiske fraktioner the upper limit for the total of the fraction of disease attributeable to all the component causes of all the causal mechanisms that produce it is not 100 % but infinity (Rothman and Greenland, 1998)

Induktionstid the induction period, which may be defined as the period of time from causal action until disease initiation (Rothman and Greenland, 1998)
Latenstid The time interval between disease occurrence and detection has been termed the latent period (Rothman and Greenland, 1998)
Effektmodifikation Case-control study on physical activity and myocardial infarction Gender Physical activity MI All high 190 266 Reference OR low 176 157 0.64 Men high 141 208 low 144 112 0.53 Women high 49 58 low 32 45 1.19
Effektmodifikation
Effect modification, interaction (biological)... under independence the joint effect of two factors is equal to the sum of the effects of each factor acting without the other, whether the effects are measured in absolute or relative terms. The reference group for the comparisons must be the group unexposed to either factor. The additivity of effects, absolute or relative, is the point from which meaningful departures from independence of action should be measured. Rothman 1986
Effektmodifikation
