Background on Faerd: Færd was launched in 2001 by Peter Uhrbrand and Eskil Romme. Peter and Eskil got the idea getting the crew together after touring up north on the Faroe Islands. - They discovered a kind of basic Scandinavian musical material, very unique compared with what was normally heard outside these islands, in the rest of Scandinavia Faerd s material is basically songs and dance ballads known and used on the Faroes, and dance tunes from Jens Christian Svabo s music book (1746 1824). An early album also included melodies from other 18th century music books, Shetland tunes and the tune Davy written by Eskil Romme in memory of Scots singer Davy Steel.. Swede Jens Ulvsand joined the band in 2005. www.faerd.com Background on Kvonn KVONN is a lively group of musicians from the Faroe Islands playing traditional and contemporary folk music from Scandinavia. KVONN s repertoire includes music composed by the band members, as well as traditional tunes and tunes from the 18th century notebook of Faroese musician and scholar Jens Chr. Svabo. Three of the musicians, Sharon Weiss, Ívar Bærentsen and Kristian Blak are regular members of the international, Faroe-based group Spælimenninir, who since 1977 has toured widely in Europe and the United States playing at folk festivals, dances, clubs, and concerts and conducting educational programs in schools and universities. Since their early teens, both Angelika Nielsen and Mikael Blak have performed often with Spælimenninir, and for the last few years KVONN has existed as a group on its own. www.tutl.com

Heimdal Went to Toowoomba Saturday 13 March 2010 There s no doubt that the groundwork for a new tradition was laid in Toowoomba. The event was mentioned in the local newspaper (The Chronicle), Soren was interviewed on ABC radio and we even had a visit from a local journalist (with a Danish background, of course). We served our popular smørrebrød to a gathering of Danes, Australians and even a Norwegian-speaking visitor from Iceland and heard many stories about the Danes in Toowoomba. As usual, time flew, Alan was in the bar, the treasurer was heard singing a snapsevise in between making coffee and cutting wienerbrød and Poul played Danish jazz CDs with Papa Bue from Per Neergaard s collection. Photo: Poul Christiansen Jani, thanks for helping in the kitchen, Val, don t forget the story about your grandfather Seierup for the newsletter, thanks to all of you for turning up and a huge thank you to Poul and Lorna Christiansen for all their help with the initial arrangements it wouldn t have been possible without you. Making Danish smørrebrød is almost an art form! Diamant Grain Mill Has anybody got a Diamant Grain Mill, asks Craig Roy (trishncraig@iinet.net.au).. It is a hand mill for grinding grains wheat, oats etc. It is made from cast iron generally a greenish color sometimes with name and model in casting on side of mill and sometimes on face of wheel you turn. Here are some pictures of a newer model there is another version that preceded this model looks similar but bigger and bulkier with the front being able to take stone wheels. I would prefer the older model if I could find one but I would be happy with any model that I could come across. Thank you from Craig Roy

Scandinavian Book Club Update Next meeting: Friday 23 April 2010 at 7.30 pm Danish Club mezzanine level (library) Austin Street Newstead. Phone Amanda 3266 4538 Amazon has a profusion of biographical Scandinavian texts, while council libraries have a smaller collection. You will however find titles on the Royals and Musical or Sporting figures readily available: Some ideas to whet your appetite available at Council libraries: Veronica Buckley s story of Queen Christina of Sweden Princess Mary of Denmark. Something about Mary Music: Abba quite a few available Celebrity: Greta Garbo an enigmatic character to say the least. Authors: Hans Christian Andersen If you like History, try: Queen Emma and the Vikings : a history of power, love and greed in eleventh-century England by Harriet O'Brien. Or Fishing in Utopia Andrew Brown (Sweden in modern times) Here is a review from Amazon about the book ABBA unplugged This is a good read and not the sycophantic drivel one usually gets in pop biographies. It's really a review of the music (which, after all, is what's important) and quite informative for someone like myself who knows nothing about ABBA. Karl French writes well and with dry humour. The book outlines the history of each member of the band and how they came together. Their background does affect their personalities, marriages, and family relationships within the group. Benny and Bjorn met in 1966. Benny started out with The Hep Stars. Bjorn played with The Hootenanny Singers. ABBA's career was launched when they won the Eurovision song contest in 1974 with Waterloo. They went on to sell more records than anyone except Elvis Presley and The Beatles. Some fine musicians played with ABBA. Lasse Wellander and Janne Schaffer laid down guitar tracks. Rutger Gunnarsson played bass. Ola Brunkert played drums. The group was managed by Stig Anderson (no relation to Benny). Michael Tretow served as their perennial engineer. Later recording was done at Polar Studios, and the company formed to handle their business was known as Polar Music International. Their records were released by Atlantic. Benny and Bjorn went on to collaborate on two musicals. They wrote Chess with Tim Rice. I found the book interesting but a few too many dissections of the music, for my liking. However, for someone interested in the music theory and history, it is more than just tabloid tales. Some things were surprising: Abba had a large number of closet fans, including members of the Sex Pistols. Mamma Mia the movie and musical has introduced Abba songs to a whole new generation and for this reason alone, they will endure for years to come. Happy reading, Amanda Mclaughlin

News from the Committee The committee meets once a month, usually at Austin Street, but for our March meeting we had a virtual meeting on the internet. QuickBooks to enable audit to occur in a quick and efficient manner. Vivian is the contact to the auditors. Membership Waiting for our new website to take shape. 7 new members came on board in February/March. Brilliant! It s vital that the Club gets new members and retains old members. Soren is following up on a few old members, who haven t paid their membership fees for 2009/2010 yet. Maintenance Hall Hire A plumber has now been in twice to fix the urinals, looks as if the solenoid requires replacing, and to install a tempering valve in the hot water system to ensure that the temperature of the hot water from the taps does not exceed 5060 C. The storm drain out back has also been unblocked, rain water was seeping through to the ladies toilet. Fire-fighting equipment requires an update and Soren will organise. The hall is getting increasingly popular, we even have a booking for 2011. Saturday is in fierce demand and bookings are building up which is good, but it s time-consuming to meet, greet, show and tell and then hand over key, check cleaning, issue cheque for deposit held etc. Two French clubs will be using the club for events in April and May and a latin dance club is also interested. Two weddings and an engagement party in March. Norwegian Club is starting up a monthly play group. More interest now as a low-key concert venue as well. Website Events No new events discussed. The Scandinavian Folk Festival on Sunday 28 March 2010 is generating a lot of interest and we re hoping to attract many visitors. Money The treasurer presented the accounts for February for approval. Costs were on the increase, but the overall result of $2,000+ was satisfactory. Lone is currently entering the accounts from July 2009 on News No news from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund about funding for the kitchen renovation. There is still hope though. A request to Council regarding a loading bay outside the club has been lodged via our local councillor. LET A DANE DO IT! Problems with your garage doors? Need a new automatic opener installed?
