University of Copenhagen Faculty of Science Written Exam - 16. April 2010 Algebra This exam contains 5 exercises which are to be solved in hours. The exercises are posed in an English and in a Danish version. The students may choose freely among the versions. Solutions may be written in English or in Danish. The students are allowed to use their lecture notes and books and personal notes, eg. solutions to the exercises from the exercise classes. Computers and calculators of any kind are not allowed. Solutions may also be written using a pencil and an eraser (blyant og viskelæder), provided that corrections are clearly made. It is recommended that in case of major changes the old version is crossed out. 1
English version Exercise 1: (25 p) (1) Show that a group H of order 1225 = 5 2 7 2 is abelian. Hint: Show first that m 5 (H) = m 7 (H) = 1 and conclude, that H is a direct product of a 5-Sylow subgroup and a 7-Sylow subgroup. Let now G be a finite group of order 20825 = 5 2 7 2 17. We want to show that G is abelian. Let P Syl 5 (G), Q Syl 7 (G), R Syl 17 (G). (2) Explain why P is a normal subgroup of G and deduce that P Q is a subgroup of G of order 1225. () Conclude from (1) and (2) that P N G (Q). Why does this imply m 7 (G) = 1, i.e. Q G? Hint: Sylow s theorem shows that m 7 (G) {1, 85} and that G : N G (Q) = m 7 (G). (4) Show that also P R and QR are abelian subgroups of G. (5) Show that G is abelian. Exercise 2: (15 p) Let G be a finite group. Suppose that every subgroup H of G, H G is abelian. (The smallest non-abelian example of such a group is the symmetric group S.) (1) Let P Syl p (G), p G. Show that either P G or G has a normal p-complement. Hint: If P is not normal in G, then apply a result from Chapter 1.17 (Transfer) in the notes. (2) Show that G is solvable. Hint: Use induction on G. Note that factor groups of G also have all proper subgroups abelian. 2
Exercise : (20 p) Let M be the splitting field over F 2 for the polynomial f(x) = x 8 + x + 1 in (1) Let α M be a root of f(x). Show by raising α 8 = α + 1 to the 8-th power that α is a root of x 64 x. (2) Show that F 2 (α) is a subfield of M with at most 64 elements. () Use (1) and (2) to decide whether f(x) is reducible or irreducible in Exercise 4: (15 p) (1) Let M be the splitting field over Q for x 7 2. Show that M/Q is a normal extension and determine the dimension [M : Q]. (2) Show that the cyclotomic field Q 7 is the maximal subfield of M which is a normal extension of Q with abelian Galois group. () Show that the commutator subgroup of the Galois group Gal(M/Q) is cyclic of order 7. Exercise 5: (25 p) In the following for a real number A the cube root A denotes the real root of x A. (1) Prove that α := 1 + ( ) 1 2 1 + 2 = 1 + 2 + 1 2 is a root of f(x) = x + x 2 and use this to show that [Q(α) : Q] =. (2) Show that M = Q( 1 + 2) contains 2 and show that 2 divides [M : Q]. () Show that α belongs to M and show that [M : Q] is divisible by. (4) Show that 1 + 2 is a root of g(x) = x 6 2x 1 and use this to determine [M : Q]. (5) Show that g(x) is an irreducible polynomial in Q[x]
Danish version Opgave 1: (25 p) (1) Vis, at en gruppe H af orden 1225 = 5 2 7 2 er abelsk. Hint: Vis først, at m 5 (H) = m 7 (H) = 1. Q G? 4
Opgave : (20 p) Lad M være spaltningslegemet over F 2 for polynomiet f(x) = x 8 + x + 1 i (1) Lad α M være en rod i f(x). Vis ved at opløfte ligningen α 8 = α + 1 til den 8. potens, at α er en rod i x 64 x. (2) Vis, at F 2 (α) er et dellegeme af M med højst 64 elementer. () Brug (1) og (2) til at afgøre, om f(x) er reducibel eller irreducibel i F 2 [x] Opgave 4: (15 p) (1) Lad M være spaltningslegemet over Q for x 7 2. Vis, at M/Q er en normal udvidelse og bestem dimensionen [M : Q]. (2) Vis at cirkeldelingslegemet Q 7 er det maksimale dellegeme af M, som er en normal udvidelse af Q med abelsk Galois-gruppe. () Vis, at kommutatorundergruppen af Galois-gruppem Gal(M/Q) er cyclisk af orden 7. Opgave 5: (25 p) I det følgende betegner for et reelt tal A kubikroden A den reelle rod i x A. (1) Vis, at α := 1 + ( ) 1 2 1 + 2 = 1 + 2 + 1 2 er en rod i f(x) = x + x 2 og brug dette til at vise, at [Q(α) : Q] =. (2) Vis, at M = Q( 1 + 2) indeholder 2 og vis, at 2 går op i [M : Q]. () Vis, at α er et element i M og vis, at [M : Q] er delelig med. (4) Vis at 1 + 2 er en rod i g(x) = x 6 2x 1 og brug dette til at bestemme [M : Q]. (5) Vis, at g(x) er et irreducibelt polynomium i Q[x] 5
