Calculus II Project Calculus II Projekt (26.3.212 12. to 3.3.212 12.) (26.3.212 12. til 3.3.212 12.) You have to solve the project questions on your own, i. e. you are not allowed to do it together in groups and you will not receive any help of the teaching staff. Submit a.pdf file via Blackboard (scanned.pdf from paper in a clear handwriting is accepted). Name the file with your CPR number, for example 29832314.pdf. Your name and CPR number and exercise group (if applicable) as well as the actual page number and the total number of pages must appear on each page. Submission must take place in the time window, no later submissions will be accepted. 1. (Chapter 12.) Let D be the set of all points (x, y) in R 2 distinct from (, ). Consider the function f : D R defined by f(x, y) := 2xy x 2 + y 2. Find equations of the tangent plane and normal line to the graph of f at the point (1, 2). (Chapter 12.) Suppose that the function f : R 2 R has continuous first partial derivatives, and consider the function g : R 3 R defined by g(x, y, t) := f(y f(x, t), f(y, t)). Determine all first order partial derivatives of g. Antag, at funktionen f : R 2 R har kontinuerte første partielle afledede, og overvej funktionen g : R 3 R, defineret ved g(x, y, t) := f(y f(x, t), f(y, t)). 1
Find alle første ordens partielle afledede af g. Hint: Chain rule. Perhaps you would like to introduce auxilary functions for the arguments of the outer f in order to avoid nested fs; for example, set u(x, y, t) := y f(x, t) and v(x, y, t) := f(y, t); do not forget to finally go back to terms of f. If you use variable names in the notion of partial derivatives (like f x), do not mix them up with the arguments of the function! Tip: Kæde-regel. 3. (Chapter 13.) Consider the function f : R 3 R defined by f(x, y, z) := x + y 2 z and determine its maximum and minimum values subject to the constraints y 2 + z 2 = 2 and z = x. Hint: The pedestrian way is to apply the Lagrange Multiplier Method. However, you may want to substitute the constraints in a more direct fashion. Is this a real three variable problem? Tip: Du kan her bruge Lagrange Multiplier metode. Men måske vil du gerne indarbejde betingelserne på en mere direkte måde. Er det virkelig et tre variable problem? 4. (Chapter 13.) Let D be the set of all points (x, y) in R 2 such that x >, y >, and x + y < 6. Consider the function f : D R defined by f(x, y) := yx 2 (4 x y). Determine all points in D where f has a local maximum value and all points in D where f has a local minimum value. Hint: It may well be that f does not have local maxima or local minima on D, since D is an open domain. The actual boundary lines of D do not belong to D, and f is not defined there. 2
Tip: Det kan godt være, at f ikke har lokale maksima eller lokale minima på D, da D er et åbent område. De faktiske grænser for D hører ikke til D, og f er ikke defineret udenfor D. 5. (Chapter 14.) Let a < b be real numbers and suppose that f : [a, b] R is continuous on [a, b] and nonnegative (that is, f(z) for all z with a z b). Show that D b 1 dv = π a f 2 (z) dz, where D is the set of all points (x, y, z) in R 3 for which a z b and x2 + y 2 f(z) holds. Lad a < b være reelle tal, og antag f : [a, b] R er kontinuert i [a, b] og ikkenegativ (dvs. f(z) for alle z hvor a z b). Vis, at Z Z Z D 1 dv = π Z b a f 2 (z) dz, hvor D er mængden af alle punkter (x, y, z) i R 3 hvor a z b og p x 2 + y 2 f(z). Hint: Change of variables in the triple integral to cylinder coordinates. Tip: Ændring af variable i det tredobbelte integral til cylinder koordinater. 6. (Chapter 14.) Consider the transformation f : R 2 R 2 defined by f(x, y) := (y 5, x 3 ). (a) Find the Jacobi matrix of f and its determinant. (b) Let D be the set of points (x, y) in R 2 for which x 1 and y 1. Find a function g : R 2 R for which 1 1 h(x, y) dx dy = 1 1 h(y 5, x 3 ) g(x, y) dx dy is true for all functions h : D R integrable over D. Overvej transformationen f : R 2 R 2, defineret ved f(x, y) := (y 5, x 3 ). (a) Find Jacobi matrixen for f og dens determinant. (b) Lad D være mængden af punkter (x, y) i R 2 hvor x 1 og y 1. Find en funktion g : R 2 R hvor h(x, y) dx dy = h(y 5, x 3 ) g(x, y) dx dy gælder for alle funktioner h : D R som er integrable i D. 3
Hint: For the second part you may use (without proof) that f is a one-to-one transformation mapping D onto itself, so that the door is open for Theorem 14.4.4. (Chapter 15.) Determine the field lines of the vector field f : R 3 R 3 defined by ( ) x f(x, y, z) := (1 + z 2 )(x 2 + y 2 ), y (1 + z 2 )(x 2 + y 2 ),. Bestem feltlinierne for vektorfeltet f : R 3 R 3 defineret ved «x f(x, y, z) := (1 + z 2 )(x 2 + y 2 ), y (1 + z 2 )(x 2 + y 2 ),. 8. (Chapter 15.) Consider the curve in R 2 whose polar coordinates are parameterized by the function f : [, 2π] R 2, f(t) := (1 + cos t, t). (a) Sketch the curve in the cartesian plane (the usual xy-plane ). (b) Find the length of the curve in the cartesian plane. (a) Skitsér kurven i det kartesiske plan ( normalt xy-plan ). Hint: For the second part, first write r(t) := 1 + cos t for brevity (and to avoid too many confusing sin and cos terms). Lookup the function g : R 2 R 2 that maps polar coordinates to cartesian coordinates. Determine the tangent vector (D(g f))(t) of the curve at time t (in cartesian coordinates) by applying the chain rule. Determine the length of the vector (D(g f))(t), as usual, by taking the squareroot of the sum of the squares of its two components. (If you don t know why this is relevant, lookup how to determine the length of a parameterized curve.) That calculation starts ugly, but a lot of terms cancel out: Only (r(t)) 2 and (r (t)) 2 survive for the squareroot. Take a break at this point. Use now that r(t) = 1 + cos t. If everything went fine, you now should integrate p 2(1 + cos t) in order to find the length. Perhaps you want to use the law 1 + cos t = 2 cos 2 (t/2) from the back of the cover page of our textbook (but be careful when taking squareroots out of squares). The result is a small integer (and, of course, not by your picture in the first part).
