It used to be employees, who created data. Now that data also is generated by machines, networks, and human interaction on platforms like social media, the volume of data to be analyzed is massive. Variety refers to the many sources and types of data both structured and unstructured. We used to store data from sources like spreadsheets and databases. Now data comes in the form of emails, photos, videos, monitoring devices, PDFs, audio, etc. This variety of unstructured data creates problems for storage, mining, and analyzing data. Big Data Velocity is the pace at which data flows in from sources like business processes, machines, networks and human interaction with things like social media sites, mobile devices, etc. The flow of data is massive and continuous. This real-time data helps researchers and businesses make decisions that provide competitive advantage and ROI if you are able to handle the velocity. Veracity refers to the truthfulness of the data. Is the data that is being stored and mined meaningful to the problem being analyzed? In scoping out your big data strategy your team and partners must work to help keep your data clean and reduce biases, noise and abnormality in data. Validity concerns whether the data is correct and accurate for the intended use. Valid data is key for managers to trust the data and for making the right decisions. Every third manager doubts data on which decisions are made. Visualization helps managers to make sense of Big Data. Dashboards provide a quick and relevant visual overview for making decisions. To manage Visuality you must ask: In what form and to whom are data communicated? In what format? Big data Volatility refers to how long is data valid and how long should it be stored. In this world of real-time data you need to determine at what point is data no longer relevant to the current analysis and when it should be eliminated due to data protection concerns. På trods af at mange virksomheder indsamler rigtigt mange data, er det ifølge magasinet Forbes færre end 0,5 procent af alle data, der bliver genstand for analyse. Så kan med rette spørge om Big Data blot er endnu en kilde til ubrugt data? Et mere realistisk resultat hvis ikke man tænker sig om! En undersøgelse foretaget af MITSloan Review viser at færre end en 1/3 af de firmaer, der introducerer Big Data Teknologien er i stand til at omsætte den til stigende vækst og positiv ROI.
Tre vigtige spørgsmål. Er Big Data lig med disruption? Bidrager Big Data automatisk til at tilfredsstille kundens behov bedre, dybere, og mere meningsfyldt end eksisterende metoder? Hvad skal der til for at disrupte eksiterende business models?
