What is behind the EU s focus on innovation Bridge the gap between research and innovation Ensure that research results can be used to combat the challenges identified by the EU (e.g. bring results from the lab to the marked). It is widely believed in the EU system that especially Small and Medium sized Enterprises will create future growth. The target for the EU is to use 15 percent of the FP7 and Horizon 2020 budget on SMEs. Collaboration will lead to an increase in private investment and involvement in research. Dias 24
Why collaborate with industry? Will strenghthen the researchers network and possibility for future collaboration. Will significantly increase the chance of achieving EU funding. Will enhance the possibility of research results being translated into e.g. novel treatments or other tangible solutions to challenges. Will often lead to access to infrastructure and technology that are not otherwise available. Attract students by facilitating future career development opportunities. Dias 25

Industrial PhD programme Purpose: To enhance research and development in danish industry. An Industrial PhD project is a three-year industrially focused PhD project where the student is hired by a company and enrolled at a university at the same time. The company receives a monthly wage subsidy of DKK 14,500 while the university has its expenses for supervising etc. covered. The PhD student works full time on the project and divides his or her time equally between the company and the university. Half salary from industry, half salary from Ministry (The ministry might raise the payment to industry by 25%) In 2011, DKK 134 mil. has been allocated for new Industrial PhD projects. Accordingly, it is assumed all qualified applications from the private sector will receive funding. Last year, more than 60 pct. of all applications were approved. Dias 31

RTI Collaboration between research and industry is an important part of the Danish innovation policy Open Funds Support for collaborative projects between companies and knowledge institutions, the purpose of which is to strengthen the interaction between knowledge institutions and companies surrounding innovation and knowledge dissemination for the benefit of the business community Requirements Must have the participation of both companies and knowledge institutions Must have a novelty value and some generic interest, i.e. interest a wider circle than just those companies taking part Must be designed in the form of an agreement between the parties involved, in which the objectives, success criteria and anticipated effects of the project are laid out clearly The results must subsequently be conveyed to a wider circle. In addition, the project: May not be tailored to any one particular company to such an extent that the broader utilitarian value of the project disappears May not be by way of product development for individual undertakings May not have a distorting effect on competition. Dias 34
